• We have been taking our basset pup to the vet for the last several months trying to rid her of a bladder infection. She has been on three different antibiotics. We have given the vet multiple urine samples and most recently she had an ultra sound. During the scan they were able to see inflammation in her bladder and kidneys. Which led to her third antibiotic. I have also changed her food to Royal Caninn SO14. Is there anything else we can do?

  • Sorry to hear your lil buddy is under the weather.
When ever a urinary tract infection is suspected a urinaylsis and culture and sensitivity should be done.
It will identify what organism is creating infection and exactly which antibiotic will be effective in eliminating infection.
Without a culture and sensitivity choosing an anti biotic is an educated guess on the vets part.
Which can be time consuming and costly.
Has the doctor mentioned stones or crystals?
These are the things that cause the bladder and the kidneys become inflammed.
Feeding the S/O diet (Im not familiar with S/O14) by Royal Canin will help dissolve those minerals and change the ph of the urine.
Besides feeding a therapuetic diet you can supplement his diet with Cosequin and Omega 3 fatty acids.
Cosequin is a glucosamine/chondotin supplement that lubricates joints and decreases inflammation .
Cosequin also lubicates the bladder wall.
Omega fatty acids are natures anti inflammatory.
So you goal is to control inflammation.
You can do that without the use of steroids or nsaids by supplementing his diet.
Check with you vet first but Im sure they would agree with supplementation.

  • I had a poodle for 17 years (died in 01 and still miss him very much)but he always had bladder/kidney infections. Our vet put him on i think it was called C/D he hated it at 1st but then got used to it after a while.Remember to take her out often because the more she expels the urine the lest likely to set in her bladder which will lead to infections.

  • My pug roxy used to pee blood. It was so scary. She had kidney infections a lot. The vet put her on a special diet of CD. She doesn't get any treats except for carrot sticks which the vet says is okay. Since she's been on the food she has not had a relapse. It's been almost 3 years.
